The Importance of a Mom’s Music Playlist

Mom.  I have to ask, do you have a playlist that you can turn to when Mom’in gets hard?  When you need a pick me up? On days you need calm or energy?  When you need to change your mindset to an optimistic one? Maybe when you need to remember why you ever got with your partner in the first place? If you don’t have a Mom’s Music Playlist, I want to encourage you to make it a priority to create yourself a playlist or a series of playlists.  The importance of a Mom’s music playlist has a domino effect on the whole family.  We’ve all heard, “If Mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy.”

Research says that our moods even affect our babies while they are in the womb.  Create a positive playlist that you and the baby listen to daily while you are pregnant.  I did this and I swear by it.  I kind of forgot about it after Jock was born.  After he was older, I came across it, and I pushed play.  He started dancing around, and he knew a lot of the words to the 3 songs I played him daily while he was in the womb.  Freaked me out!

Moms, we can choose our thoughts and moods just the same way we choose our outfits every day.  The only person in the house we can truly control is ourselves.  We can use music for our family’s benefit.  The good part about having a playlist created is that it is there for you on the spot when the need arises.

The whole point of this article is to encourage mothers to create a playlist that they can use to start their day off right.  A playlist can also be used to turn a bad mood into a good one.  It only takes one good song to do the job.

Why Music?

Scientists have found many amazing reasons for listening to music.

  1. Music makes you happier.
  2. It improves your performance.
  3. Music lowers stress and improves health.
  4. It reduces depression.
  5. Music helps you eat less.
  6. It elevates your mood while driving.
  7. Music relaxes you.
  8. It can reduce pain.
  9. Music increases verbal intelligence.
  10. Music strengthens your memory.

*All 10 of these should be reason enough to get you creating your Mom’s Music Playlist!

How to Create a Mom’s Music Playlist

If you’ve never done this before, give yourself at least an hour because once you start to reminisce and go in search, well it can be a rabbit hole!  But once you’ve got your initial foundational playlist, it’s SO WORTH IT!

  1.  Select a program that allows you to create a playlist.  I prefer to use Spotify or Itunes because I can keep those on my desktop, laptop, and mobile device using an app.  I need my list at my fingertips.  Start by building a Mom’s Music Playlist.  Then fill it with music that picks up your spirits and brings out your best self.  The songs that you can’t stand still when they play.

  2. Ideas for ways to come up with songs for your list.  Google.  Google songs from the years you were growing up the 70s, 80s, 90s etc.  Use songs you and your friends would ride around town and blare.  Add songs that your family enjoyed when you were young.  Soundtracks from your favorite movies. Songs from your high school and college years.  Whatever energy you need to revive, Google it.  You can go on YouTube and search your favorite songs.  Click on it and then over to the right songs that are similar will appear.

    Pinterest-  Just go to Pinterest and search playlist.  Endless! 
  3.   Dump everything into one list. Later you can listen to this list and shuffle if need be.  You can produce sublists from your megalist.  

  4. It only takes 1 or 2 songs to get your mood right, so don’t stress too much.  The main point is to have them in a place where you don’t have to spend time looking for them.
 

 

Creating Categories for Your Mom’s Music Playlist

Once you have your playlist set up, you will start to see patterns in your songs.  You can generate sublists that meet your needs.

  • Songs that turn you on (play these while getting ready on date night)
  • Dance songs
  • Workout songs
  • Seasonal/monthly
  • Road trip
  • Poolside
  • Songs from my childhood
  • Sad songs
  • Songs for the whole family
  • Songs for your children.  Read here how important music is for children.
  • X Songs (the ones you don’t want the kids to hear)
  • Happy songs
  • Religious songs
  • Positive songs
  • Songs that make me want to kick butt and achieve goals

You get the picture.  Let your imagination take you where you need to go and make the playlist that is just right for meeting your needs.  You can have your own in-home concert.

 

How to Use Your Mom’s Music Playlist

I encourage you to use your playlist as often as you need.  Music is proven to do magical things for people.  Above all, I rely on prayer, essential oils, my playlist, and breathing exercises when the going gets tough around here.  In other words, it has truly been a blessing to my days when I use it.

Use your playlist:

  • With or without earbuds
  • While your driving
  • While your exercising
  • When your fixing to lose your mind
  • Crank it up and let the whole family enjoy.  Your kids will get to know you some through your music bio.

I’m going to get a little vulnerable here and share my playlist with you.  I didn’t realize I would be intimidated by this until I went to do it!  I love love love music, but I’m realizing you can tell quite a bit about a person if you pay attention to the lyrics they like.  Maybe you can find something from my list to add to yours.

To sum it up, the possibilities are endless.  The main thing is that you take the time to construct your playlists.  Get a foundation list, and then you can always add to it from here on out.  This is a great form of self-care.  Being intentional about your mood is the best way to take control of your attitude. You will be so glad you took the time to archive your faves!  As a result, you can use this for years to come.
